Western Digital Hard Disk Drives - Data Recovery

Western Digital Corporation manufactures a large portion of the world's hard disk drives and is a veteran of the electronics business, with a number of innovations to its name stretching back over nearly 30 years.
In recent times The California based company has broken ground in the storage industry with a number of innovations. In 2001, a series of ATA hard disk drives (called Special Edition) with an 8MB cache buffer were released at a time when most hard drives ran with only a maximum 2MB of buffer. Then, in 2003, they launched the world's first 10,000RPM Serial ATA hard disk drive, The Raptor, a 36 GB unit with an access time of less than 6ms - followed soon after by a quieter 74GB version.
One might assume that Western Digital favoured the units' reliability, because, in 2004, they extended the "Raptor" drives' warranty to five years placing them firmly in the value server storage market. This long warranty presents an interesting contrast to Western Digital's recent policy of shorter warranty periods from as little as one year - albeit with an option buy an extended version.
Western Digital Go Mobile
In 2005, Western Digital entered the notebook space with the Scorpio series of mobile hard disk drives, available from 40GB to 120GB and in either IDE or SATA format. This signaled Western Digital's rather late entry into the notebook hard drive market. These drives are still quite young and will only be found in relatively new notebooks. To date we haven't seen any specific problems with the Scorpio drives other than what is considered typical; i.e., the drive is not recognised on boot or it will make a constant ticking noise. You may also find the drive is visible but performance slows or the drive makes a ticking sound before it crashes completely.
Common Symptoms of Western Digital Hard Drive Failure
- Failure of the Read / Write head causes the drive to crash.
- The drives S.M.A.R.T. system becomes corrupt causing the drive to fail.
- Track directory failure - The disk cannot recall the positioning of the data tracks and is unable to access the data on the drive.
Western Digital drives have a tendency to sustain damage to the firmware zone creating a block to the data within, requiring expert attention for a safe recovery.
Typically, when the system is booting up, it will hang for a few seconds while the BIOS tries to find the volume. Even though the hard disk may or may not be recognised correctly (if at all) the drive's performance will slow dramatically before it fails altogether.
We've also found that some Western Digital drives suffer from weak construction - especially the AB and EB series. The 20GB AB and EB series tend to suffer servo problems and the AC1XXX, AC2XXX and AC3XXX series are staring to exhibit severe head crashes.
Whatever symptom you recognize with your Western Digital hard disk drive, it is imperative, once you discover any unusual behavior in the unit, that you stop using the drive immediately and contact us for advice and diagnosis
