Toshiba has truly led the world in the innovation of smaller and smaller hard disk drives. The electronics giant is a notable manufacturer of 2.5" notebook hard disks and its storage technology is now synonymous with the groundbreaking capacities offered by Apple's iPods. In fact Toshiba's 100GB hard drive, the world's smallest, is now finding its way into the latest iPods. Toshiba has also managed to shrink its microdrive to an astonishing 0.85" in diameter, which is now considered to be as small as a massed produced HDD will ever get.
Toshiba Reliability and Issues to Beware
Despite the rapid advancement of Toshiba's drive development, quality engineering seems to be holding up its reputation for reliability. However, Toshiba hard drives are susceptible to common problems associated with all hard disks such as bad sectors as well as mechanical, electrical and logical failure. It's a shame also that despite Toshiba's advances in reliability their drives still only come with a one year warranty.
Specific Problems to Watch Out for With Toshiba Hard Drives
There is no definable warning period before a Toshiba drive fails. You may notice deterioration in performance before the hard disk crashes, but this could range from a few days to just seconds before complete failure. One distinctive Toshiba trait is a distinctive whining sound which can be heard just before the drive stops working. It is also common to hear the sound of the motor attempt to spin up, fail, and then retry repeatedly. Toshiba drives can also suffer surface damage caused by the heads being exposed to excessive heat; the heads will begin to adhere to the disk's surface leading to scratches and the manifestation of local bad-blocks.
With Toshiba's MKGAS, or MKGAX models a common reason for failure is the hard drive bearings seizing when the spindle motor and bearings get stuck. Once the motor seizes the heads make contact with the platters causing the drive to behave as if it's not spinning. This is one of those situations where you should shut down the unit without delay and send it to us for diagnosis. The only way to save your data in this situation is for us to place the drive in a clean room and perform invasive data recovery action.
Typical Symptoms of Impending Data Loss from Toshiba Hard Disks
- Deterioration of performance
- Sudden hard disk failure
- The drive is inaccessible although still functioning
- The BIOS recognizes the drive but a fail error appears
- A distinctive whining sound comes from the drive
- The motor starts to spin but fails and then retries repeatedly
Although Toshiba generally demonstrates good reliability, when a problem does occur it can prove disastrous for data that is held on the Hard Drive. Should you experience any of the problems mentioned above, or even f your drive is behaving aberrantly, contact us at once before you risk complete data loss.
We support data recovery on all models of Toshiba Hard Disk Drives as follows:
